Hello Lindsaya, I’m working on preserving Native American Heritage Vegetable Seeds. Seeds found nowhere else in the world from people from our region. To do this, I need space away from countryside GMO corn, space to grow seeds to share and feed people. A city plot is more ideal since corn is wind pollenated. And growing heritage corn seeds contaminated with GMO corn pollen is illegal. And according to Seed Savers Exchange a population of at least 200 corn seeds grown together are needed to preserve genetics. And Seed Savers says there’s a shelf life for various seeds.
Growing and sharing will give people an opportunity to taste traditional foods and reconnect to our regional heritage.
